Education 505 is the field experience for Education 311 and requires that candidates complete a miscue analysis. I learned extensively about a miscue analysis before I was able to do one on a student and because of the knowledge I gained, the miscue analysis that I did satisfies CEC Standard 6: Language, INTASC Principle 6, and ACEI Standard 3: Instruction, Part 4.

CEC Standard 6: Language says that my evidence must reflect my understanding of typical and atypical language development and ways in which I use individualized strategies to enhance language development and teach communication skills to students with exceptionalities. In the essay I explained that language may be a reason that the child is making miscues. People from different places around the world and from different cultures have different ways of pronouncing words. A teacher needs to understand that there are differennt reasons for miscues and those reasons can be language related.

INTASC Principle 6: Communication Skills says the candidate uses knowledge of effective verbal and media communication techniques to foster supportive interaction in the classroom. In my essay on page 3 I explained how if a student is making mscues because of language, they can be taught phonics strategies or use computer software so they can hear the words and practice saying them.

ACEI Standard 3: Instruction, Part 4 says candidates must use their knowledge and understanding of individual motivation to foster active engagement in learning, self motivation and to create supportive learning environments. In my essay I spoke about how it is important for teachers to allow children to read what they are interested in and just right books when doing a miscue analysis. Allowing them to do that will help motivate them to read more and let them see that the teacher supports them and their abilities.

Reflecting on this essay, I see that I could have elaborated on certain points more. I should have talked more about how culture plays a part on how a student pronounces words. I could have spoke about how teachers need to be culturally responsive in order to better understand why certain miscues happen. In order to show my understanding of language more I could have gave specific examples of how students from different cultures can be helped to pronounce words better and to avoid miscues. The teacher needs to be child oriented so that they care enough to want to help the student learn to read fluently. The information that I know now would have helped me to get a better grade and would have also shown that I am well aware of the reasons for a miscue analysis and the reasons behind miscues.
