Fiction Book: Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter: An African Tale by John Steptoe.

Grade Level: Third Grade

       I.            Standard(s)

Standard 1

  • Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations: and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.

    II.            Essential Question

  • How will students use summarizing and character mapping to identify key elements and condense important information into their own words during and after reading the text?

 III.            Teaching Point/Performance Goal(s)

  • Students will be reading the Book Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter: An African Tale in order to identify the key elements, the morals, and the main idea while reading and after reading the book.

 IV.            Learning Activities

  • Students will be asked to sit on the rug area; the whole class will be sitting listening to the text. There will be a chart with the summarization strategy and character mapping strategy written on it. I will have a few copies of the book so the students can see the pictures.
  1. A.    Mini Lesson
  • Welcome class, today we are going to learn more about character mapping, and summarization strategy.  Last week we talked about how character mapping helps you to identify the characteristics of one or more characters in a story.  Students will understand the concept of the two characters in the story, the characters traits. Students will also learn to make a distinction between the two characters traits that are in the story. Summarizing will help the student’s comprehension skills. Summarizing helps the students identify key elements and condense the important information about the text.
  • Ok class today we are going to read the book Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters By john Steptoe. I am going to model the strategy character mapping and summarization.
  • The entire class will read from page one through page five, and then I will ask the class to summarize what we just read and start their character mapping.
  • We will continue reading the rest of the book in its entirety.

  1. B.     Accountable Talk
  • Now that we have finished reading the book and I have showed you how to use the story mapping and summary strategy, I would like you all to write in your notebooks the key elements and the important information and what lessons did you learn from the story and how would you apply these lessons in your everyday life.
  1. C.    Guided Practice
  • Each student in the class will now share what they wrote in their notebooks as a whole ( 10-15 minutes to share)
  1. D.    Independent Practice
  • I would like for the entire class to independently practice these strategy with their just right book. When the students are finish reading independently they will identify the key elements and condense the important information into their own words and if apply they will also condense the main character or characters of the story.
  1. E.     Modification
  • Since this is an Inclusion class .I will provide grouping based on the disability. The students will work together as a group on the activities. Each student will have their own copy of the book; they will read together and converse and share with each other. The paraprofessional will also be working with the students to help them when needed. So they will be on the same level as the rest of the students.
  1. F.     Summary
  • I will ask the students to share what they have read in their independent reading.
