For my education 340 course, Assessment in Education, students were to create their own test development. In order for us to make our own test, we had to conduct 12 hours of field experience observing a classroom teacher conduct a lesson and how he/she formally assessed the students. When I was formulating my test development, I chose one of my student teaching lessons that I taught in the fall semester of 2012. This evidence satisfies 2 of Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards; Standard 2: Development and Characteristics of Learners and Standard 8: Assessment. Additionally, my evidence speaks to 2 Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) standards; Standards 1: Development, Learning and Motivation and Standard 4: Assessment for Instruction.

CEC standard 2: Development and Characteristics of learners address that I must reflect my respect for diversity among students, my understandings of similarities and differences in human development, and the ways I can use that awareness to respond to the varying disabilities and behaviors of students with exceptional learning needs.  For this assignment, I was expected to create a test that would match the learning styles of each individual learner in my class. I wanted my students to be able to include any life experiences they may have had growing up that were relatable to the children that are Iroquois Indians.  This will allow my students to tap into their prior knowledge to see what is applicable.

CEC Standard 8: Assessment states I must use multiple types of assessment information for decision making, demonstrate legal and ethical principles of assessment, apply appropriate measurement theory and practices, and understand the use and limitations of various types of assessments. When dealing with assessment there are a wide range of assessments one can do with his/her students; for my test development I wanted my students to conduct a written response to two prompts that were given.

Standards 1: Development, Learning and Motivation states that my evidence should reflect what I know, understand, and the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to the development of children. Piaget’s ideas came to mind when I thought of formulating my assessment. He stated children going through this stage can understand the differences between their own views as opposed to someone else’s. I want them to distinguish the differences or similarities they might have with another culture.  They will be able to discuss realistic like events that transpired for them in their lifetime.

Standard 4: Assessment for Instruction is aligned to my evidence because it states I must be knowledgeable and know the proper usage of formal and informal assessment strategies to plan, evaluate, and strengthen instruction that will promote continuous intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of each elementary student. When I was formulating my test, I wanted my students to be able to express themselves in the best way that they can. They would be able to relate to a child who is an Iroquois Indian.  As they wrote their written response I was looking to see if they made any real-life connections to living conditions or daily life of a child who is an Iroquois Indian.
