For Education 311, a course on Teaching Reading I, students had to write a statement on their educational philosophy on the teaching and learning of reading. This statement will be a reflection of what you have learned in this course and will be written for an educational audience of your future peers. This evidence satisfies 2 Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standards; Standard 1: Foundations and Standard 4: Instructional Strategies. My evidence also supports one of Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) Standards, Curriculum 2.1.

CEC Standard 1: Foundations address that I must reflect my understanding of evidence-based principles and theories, laws, and policies, diverse and historical points of views and human issues and how these influence professional practice. For this assignment I was expected to be able to articulate on how my own history as a learner influenced my vision of teaching and learning and how I will respond to maintaining a classroom climate. This climate can either be a general or inclusive of students with special abilities and reflective of my students’ cultural backgrounds, gender, and any other socio-cultural factors which you know influence learning. Numerous readings I have read in my education courses allowed me to provide examples to back up my Educational Philosophy. The readings were able to show me how I should and should not teach reading to my children, whether it was from the different handouts I have read or the works of Moustafa and Taberski’s text.

CEC Standard 4: Instructional Strategies states the evidence I chose to match this standard must reflect my own knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies to individualize instruction and use these strategies to promote positive learning results in general and special curricula. Throughout my philosophy statement I made connections from the articles and text I have read to elaborate on how different reading strategies will assist my students in their reading process. I stated in my educational philosophy that reading is a task many people are not good at; this is why I will have to pick different strategies that will be beneficial for my students to excel at reading.

ACEI Standard 2; Curriculum, Reading, Writing, and Oral Language, standard 2.1 says my evidence should reflect that I have demonstrated a high level of competence in use of English language arts and know, understand, and use concepts from reading. I have met this standard in my educational philosophy because I made an inference from Taberski’s text that was, as a future educator I have to keep in mind that all my students will learn to read differently.  I will have to find different gateways that will enable me to effectively teach my students reading. I have to keep in mind that not one idea may work for all my students, so I should have different accommodations that will suit the needs for all my students.
