Reflective Essay: Effective Communication

Coming in as the sixth unit standard of Medgar Evers College Education Department is Effective Communication. The department under this standard expects me as a teacher trainee to speak and write in appropriate registers depending on the audiences and purposes and demonstrate comprehensive fluency in numeracy. The department’s expectation is relevant for me as a teacher trainee it is important I become a scholar who engages in inquiry to create effective learning experiences for learners. The department also expects me to be openness to constructive critique.

As evidence for the Effective Communication Standard I am submitting an article critique on Determinants of Complexity in Mexican-American and Anglo-American Mothers’ Conceptions of Child Development. It was completed in the spring 2010 in one of my education foundation courses: Child Development EDUC 231 - 050. It was an individual assignment which required that I read Jeannie Gutierrez and Arnold Sameroff article, Determinants of Complexity in Mexican-American and Anglo-American Mothers’ Conceptions of Child Development and effectively critique the article. My evidence speaks to item: 6.1 of the Effective Communication Standard which requires that I, use and apply Standard Written English and ‘Dominant’ Dialects where appropriate and is able to code switch from standardized or dominant forms to other forms of English when appropriate.

I was asked to critique an article. I had to identify who the writers was comparing, the five different measures that was used in their interview of the parents and discuss the authors views on their findings as they did their assessments on the sixty middle class mothers. This assignment required me to write a two – three page critique in essay form. The purpose of this assignment was to see how well I can read the article and critique it.

When I first got this assignment my opinions on the article was it was boring and pointless. While reading the article I saw the importance of it. At times I got frustrated with this assignment because my professor kept correcting it and told me to correct the mistakes. I believe I corrected this article critique about 4 or 5 times. However, all the corrections did in fact help me in the long run. I was effectively communicating with my professor to make sure my assignment was the way he wanted it. On this assignment I received an exemplary grade after I corrected all of my mistakes my professor pointed out to me.

When I become a teacher, I will let my students know that effective communication will get them very far in life. When they communicate they will feel good about expressing themselves in any situation they may face. They can communicate at a professional and social level. Also for me as the classroom teacher I must effectively communicate to my students in a manner they will be to understand me.
