Reflective Essay: Personal and Global Consciousness

Personal and Global Consciousness is the second of eight unit standards of Medgar Evers College Education Department. Teachers in training are expected examine, deconstruct, and reconstruct their own and other beliefs, values and perspectives to understand their own cultures. Expectation from the department as a teacher trainee is that I develop a deeper understanding of myself in order to more fully interact with the array of nationalities and cultures. The department also expects me to have a respect for diversity.

As evidence for the Personal and Global Consciousness unit standard I am submitting an entry long and reflective essay on my Educational Autobiography.  It was completed in the fall 2010 in one of my education foundation courses: Introduction to the World Learner EDUC 102 – WID1. It was an individual assignment which encouraged me to reflect on my educational experiences from infancy to present. My evidence speaks to item: 2.1 of the Personal and Global Consciousness unit standard which requires that I, Examine their own beliefs, values, and perspectives and contextualizes these within a larger cultural context.

I was asked to complete an educational autobiography replicating my early life in my education upbringing to my present time in my schooling. The assignment also wanted me to consider making connections between my educational experiences and educational theories reflected from my class readings. After completing this assignment it left me feeling reassuring about the person I was at the start of my education path and the person I am now. The purpose of this assignment was to look back upon on my educational experiences from my early school years to my current education status.

I began this assignment thrilled to write about my autobiography, and then I realized that the assignment was to write an “educational autobiography”. So I was like to myself what am I going to write much less remember my earlier educational journey. However I completed the assignment amazed at myself for looking back and seeing what education has done for me. Through the help of my pass teachers made me feel appreciative for my education. Sixteen years later I can say my share of learning has shaped me into the young man I am becoming someone educated to liberate.

When I become a teacher one day I will always reflect on my educational experiences from my infancy years to that point of time in my life at the current moment. I will also like for my students to always remember their educational experiences so that it can help them in their life. Keeping a memory of your earlier education life will be beneficial to you because you know where you came from as a student.
