Personal and Global Consciousness

Personal and Global Consciousness is the second of eight unit standards of Medgar Evers College’s Education Department. Under this standard the department expects teachers in training “to examine, deconstruct, and reconstruct their own beliefs, values and perspectives to understand their own cultures and develop empathy and acceptance towards others’ cultures.” These expectations are very relevant for teachers in training everywhere especially New York where there is such a wide variety of different cultures. The department wants me to develop a deeper understanding of myself, so I would be able to interact with the vast array of nationalities and cultures that I would encounter daily in my classrooms.  Through this knowledge, I would gain pride in myself and my heritage that will enable me to better understand and interact with others in a diverse society. The department requires that I develop a respect for diversity.

As evidence for Personal and Global Consciousness unit, I am submitting my Educational Autobiography. This assignment was completed in one of my education foundation courses, Introductory to the World of the Learner EDUC 102-WID2. It was completed in the spring of 2010. I was expected to write my educational autobiography.  This was an individual assignment. The completion of this assignment would prepare me as a teacher in training, under Personal and Global Consciousness, item 2.2 “recognizes the social, cultural and personal impact they have on others and how others influence them and actively reexamine or adjust beliefs and values accordingly.”

The purpose of this assignment was to have me recall my educational experiences from birth to present and to tell my story. In order to complete this assignment I downloaded a sample of an Educational Autobiography provided by my professor from my CUNY Portal Blackboard account under the link course documents. I consulted my syllabus for the required length of my educational autobiography and for the relevant information that needed to be included. I searched for another example online in order to compare them to get more clarity. My professor provided guidelines to follow and I had an opportunity to write my first two paragraphs in class. I had a brief class discussion about what I wrote. He made some suggestion that may help to improve my Educational Autobiography. To complete this assignment I had to remember the good and not so good experiences that molded my life during my education. I had to recall my childhood and the different cultures and beliefs that I was exposed to and how it affected me. I did not have to do much brainstorming because I remember everything like yesterday. I had to make a connection to the different readings from class and which of them was closest to my Educational upbringing and how does the MEC- Education Department motto relate to my experiences. I wrote my draft and proof read it and edited where needed. I compared my autobiography to the samples and reedited. I proofed read once more and proceeded to publish my assignment and turned it into my professor.

I received an exemplary grade for this assignment. As an aspiring teacher in New York which is very cultural diverse city, I was able to appreciate the upbringing that I had which thought me to respect all people. It would be my responsibility to enlighten students about multiculturalism, so they may develop a respect for different cultures.
