How safe are social networking sites for our students?
Well considering all of the things that are going on today in our society as far as cyber crimes our kids aren't safe at all. There are alot of people today committing do much crimes on the internet its easy for anyone to fall either a victim or a suspect. It has gotten t the point where people are selling drugs through email and chat rooms. Normally young people like to go in the chat rooms and meet new friends not considering the risk they're taking. For example lets say a 12 year old decides to go and make a new friend online and he or she starts up a conversation with another person. He or she may think that the other individual they're talking too may be the same exact age however that may not be the case. For all they know the person they could be talking to could be an older man or woman posing as a little boy or girl which is unfortunately always the case when we watch the news or read a newspaper. Then when both individuals come to face to face things don't go as plan and the suspect assaults the child. These types of things always happen on web sites such as MySpace, tag, twitter etc. Another things that is common amongst children including teenagers are cyber bullying. As of today this issue is getting worst and the problem is growing around the globe. If a problem starts at school if would escalate into MySpace, Facebook, Instant Messenger, and all of the other websites out there and get worse than what it may already be. Other times one kid or a group of kids may could also pick one on child and things could get to the point where the victim may want to commit suicide due to the fact that he or she can't take the abuse no more. Stuff like this has happen before which is one of the reasons why cyber bullying is getting worse and worse every day. In some states harsh punishments are being enforce for those who constantly harsh others on a daily bases. Children including teenagers aren't exempt from these harsh laws at all. In some cases these types of incidents takes place in schools and since social networking are available on cell phone I'm afraid that cyber bully is no going to calm down no time soon. One way us adults can prevent children from using cyber bullying to tease or hurt their peers is by not buying phones that have special features. For your children a phone is only needed for emergencies not for games and socializing. Last but least there are people online showing kids how to commit fraud on the computer and when the children see all of these different types of ways to invade others personal information like money for example or credit information most likely there are going to find it cool and they're going to want to try it and get hooked on doing wrong things that the parents are telling them are wrong. Hopefully within the next few years all these types of crimies calm down and that officals try to find ways to prevent everyone children, youth, and adults to try each others with respect and not with hatred.
