The One Best System – A History of American Urban Education

In book “The One Best System” by David Tyack’s, David writes about the history of urban public education from the 1800’s to the early 1970’s.  Tyack’s discussed the bureaucratization of the urban system of education in the 1940’s and the public education issues that were plaguing the education system such as underpaid teachers, overcrowded classes, a loss of confidence in public schools, and outdated infrastructure.

When I looked at the education system that David Tyack writes about, we can completely recognize that black Americans after many years where they forth for freedom and won, still had to fight for equality in many different aspects, possibly nearly every single facet, of American life. Even though this took place a long time ago, and we have come a long way in terms of the reasons why urban children were being educated and the hardship they endured while trying to receive an education.   I realize that there weren’t many changes that have taken place in the education system today.  We are still fighting to create a schooling system that seeks to benefit the needs of urban children.  When we look at the urban schools today compare to other schools in the suburbs, one cannot help but wonder if we are up holding the law which stated that no child should be left behind.  When I look at the condition taken place today in our schools, it seems to me that we are setting up our children for failure even before they start school.  Many urban school lack the funding and the infrastructure to move or shift them to another level.
