Curriculum Ferment in the 1900 by Keibard Herbert

The school in American culture has evolved from what it was in the 1800s. Four different types of schools emerged during that period. Humanists: Considered guardians of ancient traditions. Developmentalist: Started out as child study movement.  (Stanley Hall). Social Efficiency: Focused on the efficiency of schools. ( Joseph) and Social Melonists: John Dewey who transformed what became known as the American Education in the 19th century.

It was during that period that William Harris became the first national Commissioner of Education.  Harris’s contribution included structurally solidifying both the structural institution of the public school system and the basic philosophical principles of education. These changes led to the expansion of the public school curriculum to make the high school an essential institution to the individual. The inclusion of art, music, scientific and manual studies, was also largely responsible for encouraging all public schools to acquire a library. As technology advances there will still be changes in the way education of our children is viewed.
