Autobiography Reflection
In my class Education 102, Introduction to the World of the Learner, my professor asked us to write an Educational Autobiography. We were encouraged by our professor to review our educational experiences in whatever aspect relevant to our lives. We also had to link our past educational experiences and theories reflected in our class readings.
It is my view, that this assignment fulfills the criteria for Personal and Global Consciousness, the Education Department Standard # 2, which states that, Candidates examine, deconstruct and reconstruct their own others` beliefs, values and perspectives to understand their own cultures and to develop empathy and acceptance towards others` cultures.
While engaging in this assignment I was able to deconstruct my beliefs about my educational experiences as a child, by examining the path I took to get where I am at present, and reconstructed my thinking as a college student, through the many journal readings in class. After the completion of this assignment, my perspective changed. I was able to view the world through the eyes of others and understand that other cultures exist. Though different from my own, these cultures are no better or worse, they are just different and as such should be accepted and embraced.
Doing this educational autobiography has allowed me to take a good look at myself and others` beliefs and cultures in a way that would not have been possible without the completion of this assignment. It has taught me to accept and appreciate everyone for who they are, and not to give up on myself, and in turn not to give up on the students that I will teach in the future.
