C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness

The goal of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness program is to improve student fitness levels and overall health by increasing opportunities for children to engage in physical activity, regardless of athletic ability. The program promotes health-related fitness through a mix of several after-school and before-school activities including traditional sports, non-traditional sports, and fitness activities. The ultimate goal is for students to grow to be C.H.A.M.P.S. — Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive Students — for life.

Department of Education Rating

The New York City School Progress Report informs families about the school’s strengths and weaknesses, emphasizing on how far the students have come in the past year. Progress Report grades are made up of three sections, student progress, student performances and environment.

The student progress grade is based on the change in student scores on state tests in English Language Arts and Math between 2010 and 2011, compared to other students in the City who started at the same levels. PS 277 received an F in the first section; student progress the school scored 5.0 out of 60 points. The student progress grade is based on the change in the student scores on the state tests in English Language Arts and Math between 2010 and 2011, compared to other students in the city who started at the same levels.

Student Performance the school received a D, the school received 2.0 out of 25 points the student performance grade is based on the results of the students in the school on 2011 state tests in English Language Arts and Math.

School Environment the school environment grade is based on student attendance and your school's NYC School Survey, where parents, teachers, and students’ rate academic expectations, safety and respect, communication, and engagement in this section PS 277 received an A 8.7 out of 15 points.

The Progress Report this year is very similar to last year. There are a few additional measures on this year's Progress Report. As part of a citywide initiative to expand opportunities for underserved Black and Hispanic males, the Progress Report now awards additional credit to schools that are raising the achievement of these students.  Closing the Achievement Gap Schools also receive extra points if they make exceptional gains with students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and students with the lowest proficiency citywide. No points were recorded in this section, apparently the school failed to make progress, and student’s grades did not improve.
