Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Pedagogy to me is teaching methods, the term generally refers to strategies of instructions, or a style of instructions.   Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a book written by a widely known educator and revoluntary Paulo Freire.  The author explains that the key to liberation is the awakening of critical awareness and how the individual thinks. Freire`s ideas of the oppressed are basically Marxist, but are also hum mastic, and even democratic in believing that all people are equal.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed is the contradiction between the oppressors and the oppressed, and how these overcome struggles. Liberation, not a gift or self achievement, but a mutual process. Never been involved in revolution, Freiere looks upon his role in education as a revolution and he believes in the ideal of a revolution of the ‘common’ people. His interest lies in the problem of an impoverish people, and thinks that the problem started in the struggle between an oppressive upper class and the oppressed lower class. Oppression caused one class of people to remain entrenched in poverty while the other classes of people enjoy the fruits of the lower class’s labor.

Freire thinks that oppression is an act of violence by the oppressor, who has set out to hurt the oppressed by crushing their humanity and making them not able to think and act appropriately. The oppressed however became a partial system that left them stagnated, thus preventing them from succeeding as human beings and achieving their goals. Freire’s views this as contradiction and thinks it’s an unnatural state which turns contrary to the natural essence of humanity, therefore dehumanize both groups. This opposition of freedom that involves dehumanizing experiences involves learning to think critically and effectively.

In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Freire appeals to the reader to awaken the need for critical awareness and the thinking process in the individual. This would involve a new education system that entails empowerment of the oppressed and this would involve a partnership with parents, teachers, and most importantly the student. Success of this partnership will result in a world of opportunities for everyone.
